![]() An epic of rock resonance and alternative momentum, its revelatory structure is awe inspiring. Months later, he still remembers their odd and concerned looks as they faced the angst-filled author of the song.Sliding across the boundaries of sonic innovation, Pearl Jam's «Even Flow» has become an instant classic since it's debut. Vedder hiked out of the bushes to ask the surprised hikers not to sing the song. He'd fought to keep it from getting overplayed, didn't want a video made of the song. They were singing "Black," the fragile song that to Vedder had come to symbolize the overcommercialization of the band. (In a Waits-like voice, he offers a snippet of an unrecorded song that he has written about it: "Gave myself a black eye/To show off just how I was feeling.") And one night, while sitting out on a deserted coastal sand bluff, contemplating life after the death of a friend, guitarist Stefanie Sargent of 7 Year Bitch, he heard strange voices coming from the hill behind him. Vedder had – uncharacteristically – even gotten into a barroom fight defending the band. But the burden of Pearl Jam's popularity has fallen most solidly on Vedder, who spent much of his off-season wondering about the effects of being in such a high-profile band. Pearl Jam is the band's turf statement, a personal declaration of the importance of music over idolatry. Here's that paragraph containing the story: I'm really glad that Pearl Jam survived the 90s. Very cool read, considering their status as more-or-less "elder statesmen" of rock music today. ![]() It's interesting to read how Vedder and the rest of PJ were reacting to the sudden fame they were getting, and how they felt it was affecting them personally as well as the band itself. It's from 1993, right as "Vs." was coming out. It's talked about in the 17th paragraph.ĮDIT#2 - If you're a PJ fan, please take the time to read this Rolling Stone article. I remember this story vividly, but I don't remember if it was something I read or something I saw on MTV.ĮDIT - Found it - it was from a Rolling Stone article. Supposedly, Eddie Vedder showed up out of nowhere and asked them to stop singing the song, as it was very personal to him. As they were walking, they were singing "Black" together. Anyway, there was a group of young adults who were walking through something like a botanical garden or a wooded area where they lived. I don't remember exactly where this took place - somewhere on the west coast, either CA or WA.
